I am a little quilt
A lovely work of art;
I started with a bit of thought,
And lots and lots of heart.
My maker is not perfect
Look closely, neither am I.
But could I hope you’d find a place
To keep me very nigh?
You see, I am a birthday gift
To the one that holds me now,
Me thinks that you might shout “Praise God!”
(And maybe even “Wow!”)
I’ve been constructed to bring you joy
To keep you warm when you cuddle,
Perhaps you’ll use me in winter, too
When cold days make you huddle.
So happy, “Happy Birthday”
I hope I suit you fine,
Love’s been sewn in every stitch
Straight to your heart from mine!

(Title Unknown)
My hands were busy through the day,
I didn't have much time to play
The little things you asked me to.
I didn't have much time for you.
I'd wash your clothes, I'd sew and cook,
But when you'd bring your picture book
And ask me, please, to share your fun,
I'd say, "A little later, son."
I'd tuck you in all safe at night,
And hear your prayers, turn out the light,
Then tiptoe softly to the door.
I wish I'd stayed a minute more.
For life is short, and years rush past,
A little boy grows up so fast!
No longer is he at your side
His precious secrets to confide.
The picture books are put away
There are no children's games to play,
No goodnight kiss, no prayers to hear.
That all belongs to yesteryear.
My hands once busy, now lie still
The days are long and hard to fill.
I wish I might go back and do
The little things you asked me to.

WHEN I'M AN OLD LADY
When I'm an old lady, I'll live with each kid,
And bring so much happiness . . . just as they did.
I want to pay back all the joy they've provided,
Returning each deed, oh, they'll be so excited!
(When I'm and old lady and live with my kids.)
I'll write on the wall with reds, whites, and blues,
And I'll bounce on the furniture . . . wearing my shoes.
I'll drink from the carton and then leave it out.
I'll stuff all the toilets, and oh, how they'll shout!
(When I'm an old lady and live with my kids.)
When they're on the phone and just out of reach,
I'll get into things like sugar and bleach.
Oh, they'll snap their fingers and then shake their head,
And when that is done, I'll hide under the bed.
(When I'm and old lady and live with my kids.)
When they cook dinner and call me to eat,
I'll not eat my green beans, or salad, or meat,
I'll gag on my okra, spill milk on the table,
and when they get angry . . . I'll run . . . if I'm able!
(When I'm and old lady and live with my kids.)
I'll sit close to the TV, through the channels I'll click,
I'll cross both eyes just to see if they stick.
I'll take off my socks and throw one away,
And play in the mud 'till the end of the day!
(When I'm an old lady and live with my kids.)
And later in bed, I'll lay back and sigh,
I'll thank God in prayer and then close my eyes.
My kids will look down with a smile slowly creeping,
And say with a groan, "She's so sweet when she's sleeping!"
(When I'm an old lady and live with my kids.)

SAY IT NOW
If you have a tender message,
Or a loving word to say,
Don't wait till you forget it,
But whisper it today!
The tender word unspoken,
The letter never sent,
The long-forgotten messages,
The wealth of love unspent.
For these some hearts are breaking,
For these some loved ones wait,
Then give them what they're needing,
Before it is TOO LATE!

DON'T TELL ME
Don't tell me what you will do
When you have time to spare,
Tell me what you did today
To ease a load of care.
Don't tell me what you will give
When your ship comes in from the sea;
Tell me what you gave today
A fettered soul to free.
Don't tell the dreams you have
Of conquest still afar;
Don't say what you hope to be
But tell me what you are.

DON'T QUIT
When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're treading seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit -
REST IF YOU MUST BUT DON'T YOU QUIT!
Life is weird with it's twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a person turns about,
When they might have won had they stuck it out,
Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
YOU MAY SUCCEED WITH ANOTHER BLOW!
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown,
Success is failure turned inside out,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,
IT'S WHEN THINGS SEEM WORST THAT YOU MUST NOT QUIT!

LIVING LIFE
The day is cold, the hour old - our time is but for a while;
Moments of life, ravaged with strife, are made sweeter by a smile.
It has been said, as one lies dead - ye rest in a better place;
But lo, take care, for none may share, lest ye have Christ's saving grace.
A book of love, sent from above - the blessed Word shines so clear;
Warnings intense, make little sense, when there are no ears to hear.
Hearts made tender, teardrops do fall - when mankind loses its pride;
Conscience awakes, new life partakes, and sin no longer abides.
The day is blue, the hour new - the husband cherishes wife;
She in her turn, for him does burn, the essence of living life.
